2016 - 2018: A new degree course Ian suggested when working as an external advisor. Ian has created and co-written three new contextual modules. Engaged in ongoing delivery to  undergrad acting students, AFF years 1 & 2  - Intro To Industry, Through The Lens, Iconoclasts To Icons.

BA Hons Digital Film Production & Screenwriting.  

2008 - 2018: Ian gave regular guest lectures and tutorials in drama directing, cross platform production and directing actors, across all year groups, leading to a two year tenure as Associate Lecturer, creating and delivering modules :-

Module leader - Performance Is King : directing actors. Working with professional actors, students engage in an intense full-week delivery and assessment.

 

Module : lecturer; Filming Performance / Pop Video with module leader Cliff Hayden. Originally launched with co-lecturer Tim Pope.

 

Professional mentor to Senior Lecturer Director Darren Mapletoft on his final

MA project, award winning short film ‘Submerged’. The role involved direct BA student contact, giving on the job training.

Cumbria Film Independents for Northern Stage Theatre & N:Stage Films 

 

Film Maker In Residence : Ian devised and ran various community arts based projects bewteen 1997 - 2002. Engaged in training participants from disadvantaged communities in all disciplines relating to film production - screenwriting, camera, editing, sound recording, directing actors and acting for camera. This unique position in British Theatre led to meetings with Lord Putnam in his role as Chairman of The BFI.

 

Highly regarded, award winning films and arts projects included:-

 

Screenlab - Two 14 week community Sceenlabs across one year with participants in Newcastle-U-Tyne. As projects grew, assimilated NVQ levels 1 & 2 qualification for participants via Durham and East Houghall Community College. Ian had to set assignments and assess particpant’s work as the groups devised, wrote and directed their own series of short films, all of which were premiered at Tyneside Cinema - patron Mike Figgis. Screenlab became a fixture of Northern Stage and Tyneside Cinema’s community arts work for many years after Ian moved on and still goes on in different forms today. 

 

The Gatherers 1 - community devised drama in Barrow In Furness, Cumbria.

 

Impact Housing - community documentary on Salterbeck Estate, Workington, Cumbria.

 

Gatherers 2 - expanding on the original project, a second wave of community film drama making in Barrow In Furness. Skill Set certificates awarded to shadow role community participants who were engaged in development and production of half hour film that was festivaled at Edinburgh and beyond and sold to regional TV.

 

A Pure Buzz - participant devised documentary, training and mentoring incarcerated young offenders at HMYOI Deerbolt, Co. Durham. Sheffield Documentary Festival prize winer.

 

Still Life - teenage mothers in Newcastle-U-Tyne, trained in film making to have their voices heard in their own documentary.

 

Watchword 101 - pre X-Factor and reality TV, a teenage Geordie girl band give voice to their hopes, dreams and fears as they learn to video diary document their progress on video. 

 

 

ACTING COACH

 

The Actors' Center North East & Actors' Centre Manchester - as a board member of the Actor’s Centre NE, Ian ran workshops for actors in Acting For Camera.

 

Capital Screen Arts - Acting school created by actor Darren Bransford. Regular workshop session leader, training young actors in screenacting.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL MENTOR

 

Bournemouth University : (2016-17) : Professional advisor on the board of BATV Industry Panel

 

Royal Television Society : (2016-17) : Professional mentor to BU graduates and judge on panel of RTS Southern Region Student Film Awards.

 

UK Film Council : Professional mentor to various new screenwriters and directors via various schemes aimed at developing new and up and coming talent. Ian continues to mentor people he first met through schemes from 2002 and 2005:-

 

Northern Film & Media - STINGERS

2002 : Producer and head of production across four short films made by new, up and coming filmmakers.

 

North West Vision - DIGI SHORTS

2005 : Producer and head of production across two short films made by new, up and coming filmmakers, including 2D digi-animation Ragnarok, a film by Geof Wolfenden.

 

Lime Pictures - as a regular director on Hollyoaks, Ian has mentored TV newcomers, both directors and actors, on the UK's most watched continuing teen drama.
